Cardioversion
Cardioversion is a procedure best described as "resetting the heart rhythm back to normal". Although it can be performed on an emergency basis, it is often used in elective situations. It is most commonly used to revert heart rhythms from atrial fibrillation back to normal (sinus rhythm). For comfort's sake, it is most commonly performed under sedation administered by an anesthesiologist. Electrically conductive pads are placed on your chest and/or your back.

Once you are asleep, the pads are synchronized with your heartbeat, and then a small amount of energy is delivered at the appropriate time to restore normal heart rhythms. The entire procedure takes just a few minutes, and you can usually go home the same day (you will need somebody to drive you). Please take all of your usual medications before a cardioversion (with sips of water), but have nothing else by mouth after midnight the night before.
